Golf is a sport that boasts origins that date back many centuries.
In fact, the correct origin for the game of golf is still up for debate.
There were similar games in Chinese, Dutch and Scottish cultures.
Though there are many theories for the beginning of golf, the most
popular theory for the origin of golf is that the game was invented
in Scotland. It is thought that the modern day golf game originated
from a Scottish game that was played in the 1500s.
Today, most golf courses have eighteen holes. The modern day sport
of golf is played with a selection of clubs and golf balls. The object
of the game is to get the ball into the hole in the least amount of
strokes.
Golfers did not always have golf
clubs and balls, like they do today. In early games of
golf players used rocks or pebbles instead of balls and wood instead
of golf clubs.
The first golf balls were leather balls that were filled with feathers.
These balls did not work very well. In fact, they barely moved when
they were struck. In the mid-1800s the gutta-perch ball was invented.
It could be hit a maximum of two hundred and twenty five yards, and
was very similar to the golf balls that are used today. The golf balls
that are used today were first made in 1905 by golf ball manufacture
William Taylor.
Modern day golf clubs are a result of evolution. The first clubs were
simple pieces of wood. As the game progressed and the years went by,
the clubs were made to perform better and were eventually constructed
like the clubs we see today.
Besides clubs and balls, the third most important pieces of modern
day golf
equipment are the tees. Golf tees are important for shot
accuracy and drive distance. The first tees came onto the golf scene
in the late 1800s and since then they have progressed in to the form
that is used today.
Golf today is played by males and females of all ages, but it has not
always been that way. There were a few years when golf was considered
a man’s sport. In fact, many people still believe that the word
golf is an acronym. These people are under the impression that it stands
for, gentleman only ladies forbidden. But this acronym is not fact,
it is an urban legend and today golf is played by men and women around
the world.
